7th Month Ge Tai


7th month is what the chinese claims - Hungry Ghost Festival
So every year, during the 7th month in the lunar calendar, there are many ge tais around.
For those who don't know what are ge tais. Ge tais are something like mini concerts which are held in the middle of nowhere. It's usually formed with a platform, some tents, very colourful lightings, bass and speakers, a host and many singers.

This year, i accompanied my mom to 2 ge tais ! I have no idea why, a Gen Y like me will be interested in this kinda thing.

According to my mom, ge tais are for the ghosts to watch and enjoy, therefore the first 2 rows are always empty - for them to sit
But, all the ge tais that i went or chanced upon were filled with lotsa human beings.

There will be a host and bout average 10 singers in one show. Each singer usually get to sing 3 songs before they rush to another ge tai in somewhere else. (if you watch money no enough 2, you'll know) It will be in all kind of languages such as singlish, hokkien, canto, chinese etc. If it's a good host, it'll be f-ing funny and entertaining. (that is if you understand dialets)

So far i heard that Liu Ling Ling (aka 600, the old lian hua in 12 lotus) is the best host in SG, then followed by Ah Nan (Jack Neo's group, the typical gangster) You know in one day, 600 earns bout S$2k ! That is super good money la, go on the stage and talk nonsense then get S$2k a day. -_-

I was at Balestier that night, having Bak Guk Teh for dinner. Coincidentally, there was a ge tai around the area too. Suddenly, i had the thought of yummy food like BKT being extinct, or rather, lost in the future. If it happens, it'll be so saddening isn't it. People in my generation are usually with certs and won't want to go near that occupation. (my opinion) Means what ? There won't be those authentic food in the future ? ): I feel sad for my tum tum.
